Andrew Payne a-t-il écrit Synopsis et Squash de façon indépendante ou pour que ces deux pièces soient mises en regard ?
Robert Plagnol : Synopsis et Squash sont les deux parties d’un diptyque questionnant la valeur morale de la fidélité. Comment être fidèle à l’autre tout en restant fidèle à soi-même ? C’est à un combat entre fidélité et infidélité devenu, au final, un combat entre soi et soi, que nous convie Andrew Payne. Mais, alors que cette question est investie de façon assez classique dans Synopsis (au sein de ce texte, l’amitié de deux scénaristes est mise à l’épreuve par la trahison de l’un d’entre eux), elle est envisagée à travers une situation beaucoup plus singulière, beaucoup plus périlleuse dans Squash, pièce qui explore sans pudeur le thème de la sexualité.
Qu’est-ce qui vous semble périlleux dans cette thématique ?
R. P. : La sexualité repose sur ce qu’il y a de plus intime, de plus mystérieux et souvent de plus flottant en nous. Il s’agit d’un domaine extrêmement complexe. Andrew Payne aborde cette question avec puissance et intelligence. Il s’approche au plus près des abîmes et des dualités de l’être. Cela, sans jamais être explicatif ou démonstratif, en éclairant de manière très subtile la profondeur des dilemmes humains. Pour autant, la langue qu’il emploie ne prend pas de détours.

Elle est concise, précise, appelle un chat un chat. L’un des enjeux de l’adaptation française que j’ai réalisée avec Vanessa Chouraqui a d’ailleurs été de retrouver ce même sens de l’essentiel, cette même vivacité.
Quel rapport envisagez-vous entre les personnages de ces deux pièces ?
R. P. : J’ai toujours pensé que les personnages de Squash étaient le prolongement de ceux de Synopsis et que, d’une certaine façon, ils pouvaient être le fruit de leur imagination. Comme si les deux scénaristes de la première pièce avaient eu besoin de s’inventer une nouvelle identité, de se déguiser en traders pour pouvoir parler de leur intimité. Ces quatre personnages sont tous soumis aux même problématiques, se trouvent tous dans un état de crise aiguë. Ils se battent contre eux-mêmes, souffrent d’un syndrome quasi schizophrénique. Confrontés à une fracture intérieure, écartelés par les aspects antagonistes de leur personnalité, ils sont placés dans une position difficile : faire un choix, tuer l’autre en soi qui ne correspond pas au chemin qu’ils choisiront d’emprunter. Finalement, on peut penser que ces personnages ont mis en place une démarche complètement psychanalytique : une démarche qui vise à se servir d’un jeu de projection pour exprimer leur souffrance et tenter de la résoudre.
