Pour ce disque vous n’êtes pas seulement chanteuse mais aussi productrice travaillant pour votre propre label. Pourquoi ?
Robin McKelle: C’était un sacré défi car je devais croire en moi de bout en bout. Je savais que j’en étais capable : avant même de rencontrer des producteurs et un label, c’est ce que je faisais. On m’a beaucoup soutenue depuis des années, ce qui a des avantages et des inconvénients. Sur le long terme, j’avais l’impression de ne plus être tout à fait moi-même. La seule façon d’être sûre que ce troisième disque serait fidèle à la vision que j’en avais, c’était de le faire moi-même. Et puis, après deux disques en big band qui ont très bien marché, il fallait assurer ! Et je suis vraiment très fière de ce disque. Quand je le réécoute, je m’y retrouve.

Comment s’est déroulé l’enregistrement avec votre double rôle ?
R.M. : On a enregistré la majorité des titres « live » comme on le fait tous les soirs sur scène. Je crois énormément dans mes musiciens, je trouve qu’ils sont fantastiques. Je ne vais pas leur dire quoi jouer, et personne ne va me dire comment chanter. Quand on a passé cinq jours en studio à New York, je changeais constamment de casquette : je chantais cinq minutes, puis je passais de l’autre côté écouter ce qu’on avait fait. Et je ne devais pas me concentrer sur ce que je faisais, mais écouter le tout, l’ensemble. J’ai énormément appris !
Vous avez cherché à surprendre votre public avec votre version groovy de Everybody Knows de Leonard Cohen ?
R.M. : C’est la partie jazz de ma personnalité : écouter un morceau et avoir le courage d’en faire quelque chose d’absolument différent. Certains vont adorer et d’autres vont détester, mais j’assume : c’était mon idée, j’ai travaillé sur l’arrangement d’Everybody Knows avec mon ancien pianiste, un Français, Alain Mallet. Il ne voulait pas du tout le faire car il trouvait que c’était la même chose pendant cinq minutes (elle imite l’accent français en anglais). Puis il a commencé par jouer quelque chose de groovy et je lui ai dit : « fais-le encore plus blues ! » On l’a fait pour la première fois en concert à l’Olympia et tout le public s’est mis à chanter. Et Alain m’a dit : « bon, Everybody Knows,c’est une bonne idée » (rires).
