Ça chantait déjà l’an dernier avec les concours d’élégance des « m’as-tu vu » swenkas. La nouvelle pièce de Robyn Orlin, Walking next to our shoes… intoxicated by strawberries and cream, we enter continents without knocking…, va plus loin dans l’exploration d’une pratique issue de la culture noire post-apartheid. Celle qui s’attache à révéler tous les pans de la culture de son pays aime provoquer, mettre du poil à gratter dans nos représentations et bousculer nos attendus sur la forme spectaculaire en elle-même avec vidéo, textes, chants, danses… Même si désormais on reconnaît aisément sa forme, son style et sa signature, son travail n’en demeure pas moins indispensable sur le fond, pointant du doigt les inégalités, les discriminations, ou le racisme.

L’Isicathamiya est une forme de chorale masculine née dans les populations rurales mais laissée de côté après l’exode. Aujourd’hui, la pratique a refait surface dans les villes à travers des concours de chants très prisés, portant haut et fort une identité longtemps reniée par l’Histoire. A l’inverse du gospel, les chants sont en prise directe avec la réalité et le quotidien de ceux qui les portent. Une parole libérée et engagée, à l’image du travail de la chorégraphe, militant pour la reconnaissance d’une culture sud-africaine spécifique à travers un combat artistique et politique.
