C’est autour de deux générations emblématiques que Rock’N’Roll bat la mesure. Max (Pierre Vaneck), professeur de philo à Cambridge et communiste, voit ses certitudes politiques et sociales s’effriter mais il reste fidèle au Parti. Jan (Frédéric de Goldfiem) est son élève tchèque fan de rock ; il rentre en 68 à Prague quand la situation semble bouger. La pièce de l’écrivain anglais Tom Stoppard parle de notre temps, depuis le Printemps de Prague et la démocratisation du système tchécoslovaque jusqu’à son écrasement en 68 avec le retour à la « normale » décidé par Moscou. Dubcek, partisan d’un « communisme à visage humain », est arrêté et remplacé par Husak jusqu’en 1989. À la répression violente des autorités tchèques, succède la Révolution de velours, une opposition qui aboutit à l’élection de Vaclav Havel, le dissident, en 1990. Le mouvement contestataire d’alors a trouvé son expression musicale à travers The Plastic People of the Universe, un groupe de rock résistant à la « normalisation ». Belle leçon d’Histoire.

Quand on est soupçonné de dissidence, l’existence devient un effroi : filatures, poursuites, mises à sac des disques vinyles contestés, dossier personnel des agents secrets de la police politique (le film allemand La Vie des autres). Il est impossible de traduire l’actualité profuse de cette fresque contemporaine qui brasse des idées et des thèmes de réflexion déjà en germe, comme le féminisme, l’écologie, les différences… au son des Pink Floyd ou des Beach Boys. L’épouse de Max (Maruschka Detmers) assume avec un discernement rageur la profondeur des débats, accablée pourtant par la maladie. Le questionnement dialectique vise la société et l’économie pour une pensée politique en construction. Les Twin Towers ne se sont pas encore effondrées. Rock’N’Roll se termine avec le concert des Rolling Stones dans le stade pragois de Strahov, (le groupe des Gypsy Queens en live). Cheveux longs et idées grandes, les groupes de rock alternatif et leurs fans oeuvrent à l’éveil des consciences libres. Une reconstitution cinglante des engagements passés à la mélancolie de paradis perdu quand les nobles causes ont disparu.
