« La première fois que j’ai rencontré Erik, il m’a dit qu’il ne connaissait rien à la musique harmonique ! Et moi je lui ai répondu que je ne connaissais rien à la musique modale », se souvenait en 2020 Rodolphe Burger. C’est ainsi qu’ils se sont rencontrés et, malgré toutes leurs différences, vite bien entendus. « Le go between, c’était le oudiste Mehdi Haddab qui, lui, avait la double culture ! » De ce dialogue est né en 2004 le projet Before Bach, où ce triangle aux oreilles pointues, renforcé d’une section rythmique, trouvait un espace d’entendement, un territoire d’expression commun. Les revoilà qui redescendent à la mine, creuser toujours plus profond, histoire d’en extraire un nouveau répertoire, composé de traditionnels des Balkans comme de Bretagne, de classiques nord-américains comme d’originaux. À chaque fois, leurs échanges soulignent les parentés entre le blues et les chants bretons, boostés par l’énergie d’une rythmique rock.
