Quel rapport entretenez-vous avec le genre de l’opéra, et, plus globalement, avec la musique ?
Romeo Castellucci : Dans mes spectacles, j’ai toujours utilisé beaucoup de musique électroacoustique. La musique et, de manière générale, le son engendrent de l’émotion dans l’expérience intime du spectateur. Alors que le visuel, par exemple, apporte davantage de l’information au public. Avant le projet de Parsifal, j’ai été amené, il y a quelques années, à mettre en scène des madrigaux de Monteverdi avec un ensemble baroque. Par contre, il me serait impossible de travailler sur les opéras italiens du XIXème siècle, trop mélodramatiques.
« Parsifal, c’est la vision d’une humanité en errance »
Pourquoi avez-vous choisi de mettre en scène Parsifal ?
R.C. : Je ne voulais pas d’une histoire narrative, anecdotique. Parsifal, c’est un monument de la philosophie. On est à la fois proche de Nietzsche et de Schopenhauer, sans oublier en arrière-plan la tragédie grecque. Les thèmes présents dans cet opéra, notamment ceux de la communauté, du sang et du langage, sont toujours actuels. Il faut par contre gommer les stéréotypes associés à cet opéra, liés notamment à la question de la race et qui ont été récupérés par les nazis. J’ai visionné de nombreuses mises en scène de Parsifal où l’on voit des croix gammées. Je ne me situe pas dans cette optique. Pour moi, cet opéra ouvre au contraire les portes d’une humanité élargie.
Quelle scénographie avez-vous imaginée pour cet opéra ?
R.C. : Les trois actes sont représentés par trois espaces psychiques qui forment ensemble une métamorphose. Dans le premier, j’ai souhaité recréer de manière hyperréaliste la forêt présente dans le livret. C’est un espace à la fois mental et spirituel. Le symbole de la forêt est très important pour les allemands, et évoque aussi, plus globalement, l’enfance à travers les contes de Grimm. Le deuxième acte est représenté par une chambre blanche, qui n’est pas vraiment un décor, mais plutôt un simple volume. C’est le lieu de la magie, dont la blancheur aseptisée rappelle les laboratoires de chimie. Sur les murs sont indiquées des formules de poison évoquant les thèmes de la guérison et de la contamination, très présents dans l’opéra. Pour le troisième acte, il n’y a aucun décor. Sur le plateau vide, trois cents personnes (des figurants mais aussi les chanteurs) marcheront continuellement. L’idée est de créer l’effet hypnotique d’une marche qui ne s’arrête jamais. Parsifal, c’est la vision d’une humanité en errance.
Il y aura également sur scène la danseuse Dasniya Sommer, spécialisée dans le bondage…
R.C. : Il y a quelque chose d’ambivalent dans le bondage. C’est à la fois brutal et élégant, érotique et esthétique. Il faut rappeler que le bondage est une technique japonaise de contemplation. Dans l’opéra, je l’ai utilisé comme une image métaphorique du pouvoir et de la peur de la femme. La danseuse intervient dans le deuxième acte de l’opéra, qui, à mon sens, est l’acte de la femme. Je pense que la femme est d’ailleurs au cœur même de cet opéra. Et quand on parle du sang de Parsifal, il ne s’agit pas pour moi du sang du Christ ou du sang d’une race, mais du sang menstruel. C’est un sang rythmique.
Travaillez-vous différemment avec les chanteurs qu’avec vos acteurs habituels ?
R.C. : J’essaie de travailler comme avec les acteurs, mais la technique vocale est parfois contraignante. Je dois ainsi très souvent placer les chanteurs de manière frontale, alors qu’au théâtre, j’adore montrer le dos d’un comédien ! Mais c’est aussi passionnant dans le sens inverse, car les chanteurs me parlent de choses que j’ignorais totalement, liées à leur voix.
Après l’opéra, vous retournez au théâtre…
R.C. : Je vais effectivement faire un spectacle à partir d’une nouvelle de Nathaniel Hawthorne, un écrivain américain contemporain de Melville et de Poe. Il s’agit de l’histoire d’un prêtre qui décide du jour au lendemain de se couvrir le visage d’un mouchoir noir sans donner d’explication. Ce spectacle sera donné en mars prochain à Rennes, au Théâtre National de Bretagne.
