Tout le monde connaît l’histoire de Roméo et Juliette : à partir de ce constat, Jean-Christophe Maillot, directeur des Ballets de Monte-Carlo, assume une version résolument nouvelle du récit. Il nous le fait vivre du point de vue de Frère Laurent, homme d’église qui voulait faire le bien en rapprochant les deux familles ennemies et qui n’aboutit qu’à provoquer la mort des deux amants. La rivalité des deux clans n’est donc pas, ici, perçue comme un conflit social ou identitaire. C’est un drame fortuit qui vient faucher la jeunesse en plein essor – tout particulièrement la jeunesse féminine, car le chorégraphe a fait de ce ballet une histoire dont les femmes tiennent les rênes : elles développent une danse à la fois narrative et abstraite, portée par une structure traversée de références au cinéma, à l’art du flash-back et du cadrage.
