«Roméo et Juliette, c’est l’histoire d’un jeune garçon qui devient un homme. Adolescent, il court après tous les jupons, mais très vite, il ne veut plus se contenter des beautés froides qu’il rencontre, ni des amours platoniques qu’elles lui font vivre. Il souhaite connaître des sensations plus fortes. C’est Juliette qui va tout décider pour lui. Elle est passionnée, volontaire, plus mûre que lui… » expliquait Noureev. Construite sur la partition intégrale, la chorégraphie est faite de réalisme théâtral et de logique historique. Et pour lui, Juliette est une rebelle, Roméo un audacieux et la mort omniprésente. Sa vision de la Renaissance est sensuelle, brutale, un peu paillarde. Du sexe et de la violence, mais toujours dans des décors et des costumes brillants et raffinés. Le ballet utilise des procédés cinématographiques pour faire avancer la narration, comme le ralenti, l’insert ou la voix intérieure… Jouant sur la symbolique des couleurs et les différents leitmotivs de la partition, il fait de son Roméo et Juliette une tragédie flamboyante.
