«Dans une improbable Vérone, non pas futuriste mais fictive, passablement délabrée, abritant une classe favorisée et dirigeante (la famille de Juliette) et une population misérable et exploitée (celle de Roméo), la rencontre des amants est proscrite et hors la loi ; la milice omniprésente et musclée, chargée de contrôler l’ordre social, n’est pas seulement l’image shakespearienne de la fatalité, c’est aussi l’emprise effective du pouvoir sur une des libertés essentielles de l’individu : celle d’aimer ». raconte Angelin Preljocaj. Le choc passionnel va leur permettre de braver tous les interdits, malgré la milice, les chiens, les matraques. La première pièce pour grand ballet d’Angelin Preljocaj est aussi significative des œuvres qui vont suivre. Avec une scénographie grandiose signée Enki Bilal, et la musique de Prokofiev, Preljocaj campe un univers sombre, aux tensions écrasantes, dans lequel la jeunesse est radicale, déchirante, comme le sont les duos d’amour, d’une rare sensualité et d’un lyrisme prenant. Créée il y a vingt ans, la pièce n’a rien perdu de sa force, ni de sa beauté, et reste d’une brûlante actualité.
