Seuls les mystiques, les artistes et les adolescents ont la folie de croire que « la mort n’existe pas », et assez de témérité pour avoir foi en l’absolu. Shakespeare, en ses sonnets, affirme ainsi que la beauté et l’amour échappent, par le miracle poétique, aux ravages oublieux du temps. En inscrivant cette provocation sur le mur final de sa mise en scène, Olivier Py adopte cette revendication qui scandalise la raison : sa Juliette et son Roméo ne sont pas des tourtereaux gentiment niais, trop tôt tombés du nid, mais des révoltés incandescents qui ont choisi de n’avoir pas d’autre loi que celle de leur amour. Matthieu Dessertine, souple, vif et brillant, campe un Roméo intrépide et lyrique ; Camille Cobbi est une Juliette délurée et virevoltante, qui houspille sa nourrice et tient tête à son père avec l’obstination crâne d’une jeunesse absolutiste. Se moquant des conventions et de la patience qui est, l’âge venu, le masque de la résignation, les deux amants brûlent comme des comètes dans le ciel sévère et immuable : ils sont « trahis par les étoiles », dit d’eux Olivier Py, qui rend, avec ce spectacle, toute sa dimension outrancière et rebelle à cet amour qui se consume de trop d’intensité.
Une spirale affolée vers la mort
Dans un décor en mouvement perpétuel, les changements se font à vue avec un rythme qui imprime à la pièce l’aspect tourbillonnaire d’une course à l’abîme. Le reste de la troupe entoure les excellents Dessertine et Cobbi avec un talent interprétatif égal au leur. Le jeu, précisément équilibré, le ton et la couleur psychologique des personnages, toujours justes, contribuent à composer un ensemble remarquablement cohérent. Neurasthénie arrimée à une cigarette anxiolytique pour la mère Capulet, névrose obsessionnelle de son époux, qui balaie vainement la scène pour la débarrasser des cotillons de la tragédie, délire idéaliste de Frère Laurent, convaincu de pouvoir rétablir la paix à Vérone en mariant les enfants des ennemis, surprotection aveuglée de la nourrice, et exaltation suicidaire des compagnons de Roméo : tous poussent au crime et sont les agents de ces étoiles cruelles sous lesquelles est né cet amour maudit. La parfaite maîtrise des effets scéniques, l’acuité d’un texte dont la modernisation n’affadit pas la poésie, l’élégance du soutien musical, l’interprétation enlevée et confondante de vérité, forment, en harmonie, un beau et lumineux spectacle.
