Un décor de caisses en aluminium. Des costumes faits de vêtements usés. Thierry Malandain, directeur du Ballet Biarritz, a pensé à l’Arte povera quand il s’est lancé dans Roméo et Juliette, une pièce a priori foisonnante, bruissante de désirs et d’enjeux : il en a fait une sorte d’ascèse artistique, qui questionne, au-delà des multiples interprétations et relectures de l’œuvre de Shakespeare, son caractère universel, notamment dans le rapport à la mort. Le chorégraphe a d’ailleurs choisi de commencer sa pièce par la scène du tombeau, en diffractant le duo, qui s’incarne dans neuf couples de danseurs : l’histoire de Roméo et Juliette n’est pas celle de deux individus, mais celle de tous ceux qui s’y reconnaissent. Car l’épure artistique ne vient pas nier l’incroyable puissance émotionnelle de ce récit – et la musique de Berlioz nous entraîne dans toute la gamme des passions, de l’amour au drame.
