Epinglés en symboles au fond des cœurs, Roméo et Juliette incarnent à jamais l’amour innocent sacrifié dans le sang sur les brisants de la société. Inspirée des amants de Vérone, qui osèrent défier la fatalité des haines ancestrales opposant les Montaigu et les Capulet, la symphonie dramatique que Berlioz composa en 1839 dans les fièvres de la passion, brûle d’accents romantiques. La chorégraphe berlinoise Sasha Waltz s’empare de cette partition magistrale tout en épurant la tragédie shakespearienne de ses épisodes narratifs pour en distiller l’émotion, où s’enlacent le désir et la mort, la beauté et la mélancolie. Structurée par deux plateaux mouvants, la danse se déploie en un jeu de forces qui travaillent aussi bien les êtres que la masse humaine des quelque vingt danseurs et soixante-dix choristes. L’imposante scénographie abstraite, la ligne des costumes, dans un camaïeu mêlant beige doré, marron glacé et gris perle, et le mouvement, charnel ou aérien, donne à cette pièce créée en 2007 une poésie pleine de grâce et d’élégance.
