Le jazz a très tôt dans son mouvement créatif intégré la voix parlée ou scandée dans un esprit proche de ce que l’on a l’habitude de désigner aujourd’hui comme le rap. Il n’y a donc nullement à s’étonner de voir ces musiques se rapprocher à notre époque, à la manière par exemple dont le fait le trompettiste Roy Hargrove, découvert par Wynton Marsalis, à la tête de son collectif RH Factor. Ce trompettiste entré en jazz par la voie classique dans le sillage de géants nommés Dizzy Gillespie, Herbie Hancock ou Freddie Hubbard, signe en 1994 son premier disque purement jazz, succès retentissant, « With the tenors of our time » (avec Joe Henderson, Brandford Marsalis, etc…), avant de devenir un producteur recherché par les jeunes talents new-yorkais de la Soul et du Hip-Hop… Le début d’une ère nouvelle dans son élan créatif, qui aboutira en 2003 à l’album décisif « Hard Groove » résolument gorgé de funk, hip-hop, soul et gospel. Au Châtelet, Roy Hargrove conviera à le rejoindre sur scène, en qualité d’invités, l’historique contrebassiste américain Ron Carter et le frenchy MC Solaar.
