Fascinant personnage qu’Urbain Grandier (1590-1634), chanoine de la collégiale de Sainte-Croix à Loudun, orateur brillant et bel homme élégant au point d’ensorceler quelques nonnes, mi Don Juan, mi philosophe des Lumières avant l’heure, osant même critiquer le puissant Richelieu… Lorsque des cas de possession et de démence se manifestent dans la ville, la chasse au sorcier se déclenche, Grandier est accusé, puis blanchi par un tribunal, puis jugé à nouveau selon un procès ordonné par Richelieu, et finalement torturé et brûlé sur la place publique. Le Théâtre du Kronope s’empare de cette tragique histoire illustrant la puissance de manipulation des pouvoirs religieux et politique, dans un esprit de théâtre de foire, avec ballet des corps, masques et musique originale. L’auteur Joëlle Richetta centre son texte sur la personnalité d’Urbain Grandier et crée un personnage de bouffon introduisant une distanciation burlesque. Le metteur en scène Guy Simon vise à mettre en perspective ce fait historique et notre présent à travers divers échos et mises en abîme. Un spectacle luxuriant et généreux, qui fut créé dans la Collégiale même d’Urbain Grandier à Loudun.
