Au cours de la Seconde Guerre mondiale, onze garçons de la haute société anglaise — envoyés par leurs parents en Australie — échouent sur une île déserte suite au crash de leur avion. Esseulés sur cette terre sauvage, sans adulte pour les guider, ces fils de bonnes familles doivent apprendre à réinventer une forme d’organisation sociale susceptible de faciliter leur survie. Explorant le terrain des pulsions et des errements de l’adolescence, interrogeant le rapport de l’homme à l’éducation et à la liberté, à l’inné et à l’acquis, William Golding (lauréat du Prix Nobel de littérature en 1983) a conçu un roman d’apprentissage sombre et violent. Sa Majesté des mouches (Lord of the flies), pointant du doigt l’ambivalence fondamentale de l’être humain, fait éclater la jeune communauté de rescapés en deux groupes ennemis : le premier, autour de « Ralph l’orateur », incarne les valeurs de la non-violence et de la démocratie ; le second, autour de « Jack le chasseur », symbolise la barbarie, l’autocratie et le bellicisme.
Une parabole qui ne parvient pas à porter
Soucieux de concevoir une représentation « à la fois épique, allégorique et spirituelle », Ned Grujic, attentif à l’aspect romanesque de l’histoire, essaie de faire deviner les angles et les grandes lignes de cette œuvre cantonnée à tort au registre de la littérature jeunesse. Forte de la valeureuse vitalité, de l’investissement corporel de chaque instant et de la fougue dont font preuve les onze interprètes (chantant, se livrant à toutes sortes de jeux et d’acrobaties), cette adaptation théâtrale de Sa Majesté des mouches ne permet pas complètement au spectateur de se projeter dans cette aventure initiatique et de dépasser l’aspect anecdotique de l’opposition se creusant entre les deux groupes d’adolescents. La représentation élaborée par Ned Grujic privilégie l’illustration sur la réflexion et bride un peu l’imaginaire. Le but que s’était fixé le metteur en scène de porter un regard sur la violence de nos sociétés contemporaines et de poser la question « de la responsabilité, de la conscience de l’autre et de la rédemption », même s’il n’est pas complètement atteint, est néanmoins suggéré et comme à la lecture du roman, libre à celui qui reçoit cette histoire d’en comprendre l’aspect métaphorique sous-jacent et les enjeux politiques atemporels.
