C’est l’un de ces très rares romans de jeunesse marquants et puissants qui restent en mémoire une fois devenu adulte. Un roman publié en 1954 qui d’ailleurs n’est pas destiné à des enfants si jeunes que ça tant les thèmes qu’il explore révèlent toute la barbare cruauté dont l’homme est capable, une fois écaillé le vernis fragile de la civilisation. La violence fait ici voler en éclats l’idée d’une bonté naturelle de l’homme et d’une innocence originelle pervertie par le fonctionnement social, au contraire la tragédie de la guerre et les instincts meurtriers entrent en lice comme une implacable réalité. Une bande de collégiens anglais de la haute société, des garçons âgés de six à douze ans, se retrouvent complètement seuls sur une île déserte. Leur avion s’est écrasé et aucun adulte n’a survécu. Nécessairement ils doivent s’organiser pour survivre, et très vite deux camps et deux visions sociales s’affrontent, entre culte du chef et communication démocratique, superstition et sagesse, sauvagerie et pragmatisme. Onze comédiens participent à cette pièce dont l’approche se veut à la fois « épique, allégorique et spirituelle » où le metteur en scène pose la question « de la responsabilité, de la conscience de l’autre et de la rédemption ».
