Comme Les Pêcheurs de perles, et plus tard Madame Butterfly, Lakmé chante le tragique des amours bercées par l’exotisme. Adaptant un roman de Pierre Loti, l’ouvrage de Delibes compte parmi les piliers du répertoire de l’Opéra Comique, où il fut joué plus de 1600 fois, et retrouve depuis les années 90 les faveurs de la salle Favart, après un très relatif retrait de deux ou trois décennies. C’est que la partition chatoyante demande un authentique colorature à l’agilité éthérée pour incarner la jeune et chaste prêtresse hindoue. Vingt ans après Natalie Dessay, Sabine Devieilhe reprend depuis sa prise de rôle en 2013 à Montpellier le flambeau de Marie van Zandt, Mado Robin et Mady Mesplé. Dans une nouvelle coproduction avec l’Opéra du Rhin et celui de Nice, réglée par Laurent Pelly avec la complicité de sa comparse de toujours Agathe Mélinand pour rafraîchir les dialogues parlés, la soprano française sera entourée de la fine fleur du chant français d’aujourd’hui, sous la direction de Raphaël Pichon, à la tête de son ensemble Pygmalion.
