Ecrite en 2004 et montée pour la première fois à Tokyo en 2005, Sables et soldats n’a pas été représentée depuis et c’est sa réécriture pour sa création française qui lui permet de renaître. Ce silence imposé par les circonstances permet justement à la pièce d’échapper au jugement circonstanciel. En effet, si Oriza Hirata l’a composée au moment de l’envoi des troupes occidentales en Irak, dénonçant ainsi l’insensé de cette entreprise meurtrière, sa portée et sa force dépassent les conditions historiques de sa production. Le texte a l’ambition et l’indéniable intérêt d’inventer des situations de tension et d’attente informulée dignes de Beckett ou autres maîtres métaphysiques de l’absurde : le désert d’Hirata est situé, sur la carte des terres littéraires, quelque part entre Le Désert des Tartares et Le Rivage des Syrtes. Et tout le paradoxe est là de ce texte qui serait passionnant s’il était neuf mais qui, de fait, ronronne dans l’éternel retour du même sans que quoi que ce soit de bien nouveau n’y apparaisse dans l’élucidation de notre humaine condition. Le texte ne manque pas d’intérêt, donc, mais manque d’originalité.
Un spectacle ensablé
La scénographie plante un décor de sable pris dans deux grandes poches qui le suspendent dans l’espace sur fond de ciel changeant. De jardin à cour, les comédiens passent et repassent : trois soldats occidentaux, deux ennemis orientaux, néophytes en tuerie les uns comme les autres et tous bien en peine de comprendre le sens de leurs pérégrinations ensablées, un couple en voyage de noce, une femme à la recherche de son mari militaire et un père et sa fille à la recherche de leur épouse et mère. Des rencontres hasardeuses entre tous ces personnages naissent des dialogues improbables et drôles qui explicitent l’incommunicabilité entre les êtres et l’aberration des situations que la guerre leur impose. Les comédiens offrent un jeu d’élégante et précise facture au spectacle et servent avec efficacité ces variations sur le néant. Toujours est-il qu’on finit par se lasser de ce rien ainsi mis en scène, l’ensemble tournant au pur exercice rhétorique dont la perfection formelle ne console pas complètement de l’inanité du fond. Manquent quelques oasis en formes d’obstacles problématiques dans cette traversée transparente du désert…
