Un brave cordonnier et un pauvre vendeur de poissons : tels étaient Sacco et Vanzetti, venus en Amérique au lendemain de la Première Guerre mondiale pour échapper à leur misère natale. Leurs défauts principaux étaient d’être ouvriers, immigrés et anarchistes : soupçonnés par l’Amérique en crise d’être des agents politiques séditieux en plus que de dangereux brigands, ils furent accusés du meurtre des deux caissiers qui transportaient la paie du personnel d’une fabrique de chaussures de South-Braintree, aux environ de Boston. En dépit des témoignages contradictoires et de l’évidente innocence des deux hommes, et malgré la campagne mondiale de soutien et les millions de signatures protestataires, ils furent exécutés à l’été 1927, après six années de procédure. « Plutôt que de trancher catégoriquement sur l’innocence ou la culpabilité des deux accusés, j’ai préféré suggérer une clef de l’histoire en plongeant dans les coulisses d’une époque et tenter de mettre à jour les liens qui se tissent entre les grandes institutions et les destins individuels », dit Loïc Joyez, qui voit dans l’histoire de Sacco et Vanzetti « les premiers rouages de la machine à uniformiser déjà en place et si prégnante dans les comportements d’aujourd’hui ». Un spectacle émouvant, bouleversant et généreux, servi par des comédiens convaincants ; une belle leçon d’histoire et de fraternité.
