L’hommage rendu cette année à Olivier Messiaen par l’Orchestre philharmonique de Radio France connaît son apothéose avec l’opéra Saint François d’Assise. L’œuvre devrait une fois encore inspirer Myung-Whun Chung, remarquable depuis le début des célébrations du centenaire du compositeur. Dans cette œuvre à nulle autre pareille, de proportions gigantesques (trois actes, huit tableaux, quatre heures), tout l’univers de Messiaen se retrouve : la foi, bien sûr, mais aussi la lumière et les chants d’oiseaux. Présenté lors de sa création au Palais Garnier en 1983 dans une mise en scène de Sandro Sequi, puis, en 1992, dans celle, quelque peu iconoclaste de Peter Sellars à l’Opéra Bastille, Saint François d’Assise sera cette fois donné en version oratorio, soutenue visuellement par des projections vidéo du compositeur et artiste multimédia Jean-Baptiste Barrière.
