Familier des concerts familiaux des séries classiques, Le Carnaval des animaux de Camille Saint-Saëns est souvent accompagné du texte – reconnaissons-le, sans grand intérêt – de Francis Blanche, lu en introduction humoristique à chacune de ses quatorze parties. L’enthousiasmant Amazing Keystone Big Band, co-dirigé par Bastien Ballaz, Jon Boutellier, Fred Nardin et David Enhco, a eu la bonne idée d’inventer une nouvelle version jazz de la Grande fantaisie zoologique du compositeur français, en mobilisant ses 17 musiciens tous swing et cuivres dehors et en s’appuyant sur un texte inédit de Taï-Marc Le Thanh. « Chaque thème a été retranscrit en jazz. À chaque animal, nous avons associé un instrument et un style de jazz. Ce qui permet de découvrir les instruments du Big Band et l’histoire du jazz depuis le début du XXème siècle. Pour chaque morceau, nous avons travaillé pour donner une sensation presque visuelle de l’animal décrit et nous avons réfléchi à ce qui pouvait produire des émotions : chaque élément de l’orchestration, de l’arrangement, de la composition a été pensé dans ce sens » explique le trompettiste David Enhco.
