1893. Comme chaque année, les ouvriers affluent vers Aigues-Mortes, pour la récolte du sel. Venus des Cévennes et d’Ardèche, souvent repris de justice et vagabonds, venus du Piémont, de Ligurie et de Toscane, ils s’échinent pour des salaires de misère. Les souvenirs de la Grande dépression de 1875 attisent les récriminations sur la protection du travail national et les rivalités entre trimards français et italiens : le 17 août 1893 éclate une émeute contre les Italiens, qui provoque la mort de 8 d’entre eux et fait plus de 50 blessés. Déterrant ce sanglant pogrom des « non-lieux de mémoire » de l’histoire républicaine, selon l’expression de Gérard Noiriel, la Cité Nationale de l’Histoire de l’Immigration a passé commande d’une pièce à Serge Valletti. L’auteur marseillais d’origine italienne tisse avec finesse les fils du passé pour tramer une comédie macabre qui reflète sans juger tous les questionnements suscités encore aujourd’hui par la présence de l’étranger dans la société française. Menant une belle troupe de comédien, le metteur en scène Patrick Pineau fait entendre ce « théâtre à hauteur d’homme, un théâtre miroir qui nous confronte à d’autres nous-mêmes. ».
