Dès sa création en 1905 à Dresde, l’opéra de Richard Strauss crée le scandale. À New York, l’œuvre est même interdite après la première, pendant 17 ans ! Il faut dire que le personnage de Salomé, qui séduit son beau-père Hérode dans sa célèbre danse des sept voiles pour obtenir la tête de Jochanaan dont elle baisera les lèvres, est aussi fascinant que mystérieux. Dans la version de Krzysztof Warlikowsky, créée en 2019 à l’Opéra de Munich, pas de pittoresque oriental évoquant une Bible fantasmée. Comme le metteur en scène polonais sait si bien le faire, il interroge l’histoire contemporaine et ses ambiguïtés, transposant la partition dans les années 1930, où la mort rôde et les nazis aussi qui vont bientôt détruire la culture juive dans un prologue saisissant. Le rôle redoutable et exigeant de Salomé sera interprété pour la première fois par Patricia Petibon. L’accompagneront des chanteurs rompus au répertoire straussien comme Wolfgang Ablinger-Sperrhacke dans Hérode, sous la baguette de Henrik Nánási.
