« La plus grande star musicale du monde musulman », c’est ainsi que le Time Magazine a présenté en 2009 le natif de Téhéran. On ne sait si ce titre est tout à fait justifié mais il est certain que Sami Yusuf est du genre surdoué. Grandi en Grande-Bretagne, ce multi instrumentiste – il joue du tar, tanbur, tombak, santoor, oud, piano… – a de qui tenir : son père n’est autre que le compositeur iranien Babak Radmanesh. C’est cette double appartenance culturelle, tout aussi bien encrée dans la tradition occidentale que dans le savoir moyen-oriental, que son répertoire original met en exergue, à l’image de When Paths Meet, un ensemble de pièces où il entend outrepasser les frontières spatio-temporelles comme briser les œillères qui séparent sacré et profane. En ces temps troublés, on peut y percevoir un juste diapason.
