« On the Town a renouvelé le genre de la comédie musicale »
Quelle place occupe On the Town dans l’œuvre de Leonard Bernstein ?
Samuel Jean : C’est la première grande comédie musicale écrite par Bernstein. Il n’a que 25 ans – nous sommes en 1944 – et il collabore pour la première fois avec le chorégraphe Jerome Robbins. Cette œuvre montre un renouveau du genre. On perçoit dans l’écriture l’influence de Ravel et Stravinsky. Mais également du jazz, par exemple dans la manière dont il emploie les cuivres, comme dans un big-band. Cette partition a ouvert la voie à d’autres œuvres écrites par Bernstein dans le même style, notamment West Side Story.
Quelle est l’intrigue ?
S.J. : Elle est toute simple : il s’agit de l’histoire de marins qui sont en permission à New York pendant la Seconde Guerre Mondiale. Ils visitent la ville et y font des rencontres amoureuses. Ce qui est touchant – d’autant que l’oeuvre a été écrite pendant le conflit –, c’est la scène finale durant laquelle les marins repartent de New York. Les spectateurs ne savent pas s’ils reviendront vivants…

Comment Bernstein utilise-il les voix dans cette œuvre ?
S.J. : Le casting de la production du Châtelet est composé à la fois de chanteurs classiques et de voix issues du milieu du jazz. Car l’écriture musicale oscille en permanence entre ces deux univers. Par ailleurs, contrairement à l’opéra, le chant n’est pas toujours au premier plan. La moitié de l’œuvre est purement instrumentale, destinée au ballet.
Vous êtes vous-même à la fois pianiste et chef d’orchestre. Bernstein représente-t-il un modèle pour vous ?
S.J. : Oui, mais contrairement à lui, je ne compose pas ! Il est vrai que j’ai toujours souhaité développer un parcours pluridisciplinaire. J’ai longtemps fait de l’accompagnement au piano dans un conservatoire, puis j’ai été chef de chant, ce qui consiste à préparer les chanteurs pour des productions lyriques. J’ai ensuite eu l’opportunité de diriger des orchestres, notamment en tant qu’assistant. Et la pédagogie m’intéresse également beaucoup – je conduis ainsi des projets avec des enfants et j’enseigne au Conservatoire Supérieur de Paris. Je ne m’ennuie pas !
