Sautillant joyeusement par-dessus la fâcheuse césure entre traditionnel et contemporain, Zanzibar envoie valdinguer les étiquettes et prend la tangente en piste ! En trois créations depuis 2001, il a déjà sillonné le monde et connu les plaisirs fort convoités du succès. « Nous conjuguons une démarche de création, un mode de vie itinérant et l’autonomie de notre lieu de diffusion grâce au chapiteau. Nous sommes un cirque en cavale, à la fois insolent et libre, mais loyal et populaire, raconte Jef Odet, cofondateur de cette aventure avec sa femme Chloé. Nous appartenons à la marge. J’aime cette façon d’exister socialement en échappant au système. » Avec Sang et Or, Zanzibar retourne aux sources de la dramaturgie circassienne et plonge dans l’esthétique des années 20, époque où littérature, variété, music-hall se côtoient autour de la piste. « C’est un spectacle de cirque total, qui amène des émotions les unes après les autres, sans se justifier, comme si le public avait accès à ce monde-là sans besoin d’une narration, d’une initiation ou de codes. »
Un nouveau cirque d’autrefois
Pour composer la partition, Jef Odet s’est inspiré du Cri de Munch. « Ce tableau évoque pour moi le cri primal, à l’origine de notre dramaturgie, c’est-à-dire cette peur qui tenaille l’artiste quand il entre en piste et affronte le risque au milieu du public, sans tricherie. Par le dépassement de lui-même, par le sacrifice, par la jouissance de la prouesse, il atteint l’extase rédemptrice. Il est pardonné. » Sur la piste, les treize artistes enchaînent numéros époustouflants et joyeuses incartades. « Le sang renvoie à ce qui nous relie : le besoin de famille, de clan, la sueur que nous versons tous les jours pour atteindre à l’excellence par notre travail. L’or, c’est le moment de grâce, ce temps suspendu, lorsque, à la fin du spectacle, nous sentons la joie partagée avec le public. » Et cette liberté-là n’a pas de prix !
