A cinquante-neuf ans, Ushio Amagatsu est toujours la figure de proue de Sankai Juku, à la fois danseur et chorégraphe dans ce groupe d’hommes dont le nom signifie « l’atelier de la montagne et de la mer ». Créée en 1979, la compagnie s’inscrit dans le mouvement de la danse butô : ayant étudié la danse classique et moderne, puis rencontré Tatsumi Hijikata et Kazuo Ohno, Amagatsu se tourne vers les préceptes d’une danse qui, malgré ses origines modernes, puise son énergie dans des forces rituelles, qui relient la mort à la vie, les ténèbres à la lumière. A ses débuts, le chorégraphe s’inscrit dans la lignée du travail de ses maîtres et propose une gestuelle torturée, poussant le corps dans ses profondeurs et ses expressions les plus monstrueuses. C’est au moment où la réalité rejoint le spectaculaire qu’Amagatsu décide de se défaire de ces spectres : alors que Sankai Juku performe à Seattle, corps à demi-nus et suspendus par les pieds à plusieurs mètres de hauteur, un accident survient, provoquant la mort d’un des danseurs. C’est le début d’une nouvelle ère pour le créateur, désormais davantage tourné vers la clarté. Ses œuvres ne portent plus le choc de la provocation mais celui de l’esthétique. Il convoque sur scène des images fortes, reliées par des scénographies très élaborées et nimbant le spectacle d’une atmosphère poétique.
Symboles et images fortes peuplent l’imaginaire d’Amagatsu
Sable, eau, immenses feuilles de lotus tombant des cintres marquent à jamais l’imaginaire du spectateur, plongé dans une forme de rituel troublant, ou apaisant. Chaque fois que Sankai Juku vient à Paris, il offre au public une création, accompagnée d’une reprise. C’est aussi le cas cette saison. De sa création, on ne saura rien. Toki, pièce de 2005, déploie le plus pur style de Sankai Juku : on voit les danseurs dans leur terrifiante mais cristalline blancheur, torse et crâne nus, évoluant dans un décor de stèles noires. Là encore, la mort plane, et Amagatsu joue sur le fil ténu de cette quête du vivant au cœur d’images fortes.
