En 1979, le chorégraphe japonais Ushio Amagatsu fonde Sankai Juku avec trois de ses élèves. La compagnie, dont le nom signifie “l’Atelier de la montagne et de la mer”, s’est rapidement imposée comme l’un des groupes de butô les plus importants. Ces hommes au corps recouvert d’une matière blanche, au crâne rasé, dont les actions naviguent entre la cocasserie et la terreur, révolutionnent la conception du corps en scène. Trente ans plus tard, Ushio Amagatsu continue de fabriquer des spectacles inattendus, imprévisibles, toujours frappants. De sa prochaine création, on sait peu de chose : elle comptera sept danseurs, comprendra sept tableaux, et durera une heure vingt-cinq minutes. Une certaine dose de mystère, donc – qui est en fait déjà une façon, pour le spectateur, de se préparer au spectacle.
