Sans la gaîté d’après les écrits de Henry Monnier – dessinateur, écrivain et acteur – procède d’une œuvre plutôt confidentielle aujourd’hui. En quelques coups de crayon, le maître croque des types identifiables, empreints de solitude et de niaiserie, que quelques gestes, travers et tics dévoilent sans la moindre charité ni compassion. Monnier dépeint la société du XIXe siècle crûment, de la misère des bas-fonds à l’ennui de la bourgeoisie en passant par la bêtise des classes moyennes. La langue, déformée et détournée des règles grammaticales, est l’arme maîtresse de ce dialoguiste talentueux. L’espiègle Patrice Bigel avec sa troupe de l’Usine Hollander s’est penché sur ce monde sans bonheur où l’on s’ennuie en dînant (Le Dîner bourgeois des Scènes populaires). Le repas s’éternise et l’on attend en vain, au bord de l’angoisse et jusqu’au délire. C’est bien la parole nue qui authentifie ces paysans, citadins, gens de maison, domestiques, sots à l’égal de leurs maîtres. Écoutons L’esprit des campagnes : « L’soir, j’me promenons tout seul l’long des aulnais, pis j’pleurons, voyais-vous…j’pleurons, j’pleurons !… v’la mon seul plaisi sus tarre… »
Personnages oniriques
L’équipe de Bigel – Matthieu Beaudin, Mara Bijeljac, Sophie Chauvet, Karl-Ludwig Francisco – lève avec conviction le glaive de cette parole révélatrice de la misère humaine. Dans une atmosphère sombre et bleue de cauchemar oppressant et de fantasmagorie, les personnages oniriques semblent des silhouettes macabres exténuées dont la vie cruelle a dissipé la mémoire de l’âme. Sur le plateau, errent des figures expressionnistes avouant une crise morale cruelle. Les portraits et les scènes de la vie du temps expriment un sentiment d’angoisse face aux bouleversements provoqués par le monde nouveau – industrialisé et urbanisé -, véritable fabrique à laissés-pour-compte. Crudité des maquillages et des faces blafardes, contrastes dissonants et déformations brutales, les simplifications de la dégaine humaine visionnaire et fantastique accentuent la sensation de souffrance intérieure. Une vision pessimiste et hallucinée d’un monde pas si révolu que ça.
