L’un est né à Buenos Aires, où il commence sa carrière artistique dans la scène musicale underground avant de se tourner vers le cirque. L’autre est Suisse mais grandit au Costa Rica, et s’initie aux arts du cirque et à la musique dès l’âge de 13 ans. Juan Ignacio Tula et Stefan Kinsman ont donc tous deux des identités voyageuses. Des curiosités ouvertes à des horizons divers, qu’ils font dialoguer autour de leur agrès favori : la roue Cyr. Dans Somnium, créé peu après leur sortie du Centre National des Arts du Cirque (CNAC) où ils ont fait connaissance, ils mettaient en place un vocabulaire original fait de portés, manipulation et antipodisme ; Santa Madera en est le prolongement.
Cercle sacré
Comme son titre le laisse deviner, Somnium était déjà teinté de rêves. De croyances. Le duo poursuit cet axe dans Santa Madera en s’inspirant d’un rituel sud-américain pratiqué par les peuples indigènes (Incas et Quechuas) : l’utilisation d’un bois odorant connu en Occident pour son huile essentielle, le Palo Santo, afin de chasser les mauvais esprits et célébrer les liens unissant les différentes communautés. Substitut de ce bois vertueux, la roue Cyr joue entre les deux artistes le rôle d’interface dans une réflexion à deux corps sur la religion, le paganisme et la multiculturalité. Un programme renversant !
