La voix la plus rare dans le monde lyrique est celle de contralto. C’était pourtant la tessiture la plus naturelle des premiers siècles de l’opéra, de Monteverdi à Gluck, en passant par Vivaldi et Haendel. Sara Mingardo est donc continuellement sollicitée pour défendre les grandes partitions baroques. De sa voix sombre, vibrante, très humaine et étrange à la fois, elle traduit les sentiments de mère éplorée ou de chevalier belliqueux avec une ambiguïté sexuelle troublante. La noblesse de son timbre lui assure également de belles incursions dans le répertoire moderne, pour lequel Schoenberg ou Britten sont revenus à des procédés vocaux sans exubérance. C’est sans doute dans l’intimité des petites salles autour notamment de programmes liturgiques qu’elle établit le mieux un contact direct avec le public. Elle chante mais semble nous parler, tant elle privilégie le texte même dans les effusions virtuoses. En s’aventurant dans les abysses de la voix féminine, elle nous communique sa sérénité, là où les autres cantatrices se mettraient en danger.
