Comment ces expériences menées dans les deux musées, intitulées Dialoge 09, ont-elles nourri la création de Continu ?
Sasha Waltz : Dans le Neues Museum de Berlin, redessiné radicalement par David Chipperfield, puis le musée MAXXI de Rome, pensé par Zaha Hadid, nous avons proposé des installations chorégraphiques qui emmenaient le public à travers tout le bâtiment. En évoluant dans les espaces de ces musées, en cherchant par des improvisations les échos que l’architecture, les matières, les objets d’histoire exposés déclenchaient dans nos corps, nous avons accumulé beaucoup de matériaux très riches qui ouvraient la voix à de plus vastes explorations encore. Continu s’inscrit à la fois dans la suite et dans un nouveau processus de travail. Les groupes de Dialoge 09, à Berlin et à Rome, étaient très différents, de même que leurs propositions. J’ai extrait certains éléments de ces expériences, que j’ai ici approfondis. Dans mon parcours artistique, chaque pièce est liée à la précédente, par continuation ou par contradiction. Je crée avec ce que j’ai traversé.

Quelle est concrètement l’influence de la perception de l’espace in situ sur le mouvement ?
S. W. : Les danseurs ont totalement investi les lieux, les ont éprouvés physiquement, en utilisant les murs, les hauteurs, le sol, pour inventer du mouvement. Ils ont vraiment dansé avec l’espace. L’histoire portée par les œuvres a aussi nourri les improvisations, par exemple les vestiges témoignant de l’éruption du Vésuve, de l’engloutissement de Pompéi et de la panique des habitants. L’énergie dégagée par la puissance volcanique, la destruction ou la fuite se retrouve dans la pièce. Elle nous a servis pour chercher des sensations très archaïques, sur le besoin de bouger, comme individu ou comme groupe, sur le vouloir, le rapport au destin, le désir de l’autre. Continu met en tension deux séquences contrastées : l’une, sombre, est reliée aux émotions brutes, à l’impulsion, à la chair et à la terre, voire à la part sauvage de l’être ; l’autre, blanche, évoque la rationalité, la distance, la quiétude intellectuelle, l’aspiration spirituelle.
Quelle scénographie avez-vous conçue avec Thomas Schenk, Pia Maier Schriever pour Continu ?
S. W. : La scénographie ne s’inspire pas directement de l’architecture des musées, mais dessine un espace très épuré, presque vide, comme une vaste salle noire. Plutôt que de transposer sur scène des décors qui nous avaient touchés là-bas, nous laissons s’exprimes ces traces à travers le corps.
La pièce rassemble 24 danseurs. Le groupe est-il important dans votre démarche chorégraphique ?
S. W. : J’aime chorégraphier les grands ensembles. La constitution des groupes et le rapport à l’individu sont des thèmes présents dans plusieurs de mes pièces. J’en explore différentes facettes : le comportement d’une personne face à la masse des autres, l’intégration de l’un dans le nombre, les forces qui interagissent au sein d’une formation, la réaction face à l’échappée de duos ou de trios…
Votre relation à la musique a évolué depuis vos premières pièces. Vous avez choisi ici des œuvres de Varèse, de Vivier et de Xenakis.
S. W. : Le dialogue avec la musique est devenu un axe essentiel de ma recherche aujourd’hui. Ma curiosité s’est aiguisée au fil des années et je me frotte à un répertoire de plus en plus large, qui va du 18e siècle à nos jours. Ce voyage à travers la musique, présent pour Dialoge 09, a également beaucoup nourri Continu. Les choix musicaux allient la puissance émotionnelle à l’abstraction et irriguent toute la chorégraphie.
