David vient de tuer Goliath, le peuple d’Israël l’acclame. Dès le lever de rideau, la force sidérante du travail scénique de Barrie Kosky fascine : les chœurs forment des tableaux vivants, cependant que le metteur en scène australien tisse une narration en la tressant magnifiquement autour de l’oratorio de Haendel. Il impulse une formidable énergie à la scène. Encore méconnu en France, ses mises en scène centrées sur la vitalité de l’acteur et structurées par des trouvailles scénographiques étonnantes sont acclamées sur les plus grandes scènes.
Un art total
Son Pelléas et Mélisande dégageait une intensité poétique rare, tandis que son Macbeth laissait éclater une implacable noirceur. Cette production du Festival de Glyndebourne est emblématique de son art total, capable de conjuguer tous les effets de la scène avec une remarquable intelligence dramatique. Un art merveilleusement contrasté, et magnifiquement touchant. Christopher Purves, l’un des plus brillants acteurs de la scène lyrique actuelle, reprend le rôle-titre, le contre-ténor Christopher Ainslie incarne David, Karina Gauvin Merab. Dans la fosse, Laurence Cummings, grand haendelien, dirige Les Talens Lyriques.
