Comédien confirmé, vous devenez un auteur contemporain débutant… un passage à l’acte ?
Scali Delpeyrat : Le désir d’écrire était là depuis longtemps, laissé en suspens par ma passion de jouer. Il a m’a fallu le temps et la fréquentation d’auteurs tels que Hanoch Levin, David Lescot, Tony Küchner ou Olivier Py pour passer à l’acte. Je leur dois beaucoup. Ecrire aujourd’hui, c’est effectuer un travail pour ouvrir le regard sur le temps présent. Il n’y a pas de théâtre qui ne soit de son temps, ou alors c’est du mauvais théâtre. Nous sommes tellement des constructions sociales, historiques, façonnés par le passé, la culture… Le théâtre nous aide à savoir ce qu’est ce « nous ». Dans cette recherche, la cohérence de la forme, ce qui fait qu’un monde existe à l’intérieur d’un texte, m’importent plus que la situation dramatique ou les personnages.

Pourquoi vous intéresser à la figure de Michael Jackson ?
S. D. : Il fut bien plus qu’un artiste ou une idole : il est entré dans la tête du XXe siècle et a révélé radicalement, tragiquement, les pathologies de l’époque à travers son rapport au corps. Le texte ne parle pas de Michael Jackson mais de ce qu’en parler veut dire, au sens bourdieusien. A l’ère post-industrielle, la jouissance par la consommation est devenue une injonction pour absorber le surplus de produits, et le plaisir une norme. Michael Jackson danse la mécanisation industrielle, la conquête de l’espace, la machine de guerre économique… Il forme un contrepoint avec Fred Astaire et s’inscrit aussi dans la nostalgie d’une Amérique joyeuse que l’Europe a rêvée. La pièce cerne peu à peu le sujet, elle tourne autour de quatre notes : la danse, le sexe, la mort comme absence et la position de l’artiste.
« L’art, c’est le ménisque » lâche un des personnages… C’est-à-dire ?
S. D. : L’artiste tient une place difficile, peut-être douloureuse, ou intenable dans la chaîne symbolique, parce qu’il se collette avec le réel, il se confronte à son désir. Il fait le « sale boulot » de donner à voir, entendre… comprendre ?
