Rachida et Annie ne mourront pas. Elles seront battues, elles tomberont et saigneront, mais elles finiront par relever la tête. Au début de son travail sur la violence conjugale, Gérard Watkins envisageait pourtant de faire suivre à ses deux héroïnes un parcours tragique classique. Mais Ernestine de l’Observatoire de la violence envers les femmes du 93 a été catégorique : « Il ne faut pas que la femme meure ». Soucieux d’écrire « utile » et confiant dans l’expertise de cet Observatoire qui l’a accompagné tout au long d’une année de recherches, l’auteur et metteur en scène de la compagnie Perdita Ensemble a suivi ce conseil. Scènes de violences conjugales n’en fait pas moins approcher le spectateur au plus près des mécanismes de transformation de l’amour en cauchemar. En sidération. Résultat d’un processus en deux temps – neuf mois d’écriture de plateau avec les quatre comédiens, puis une phase d’écriture solitaire – la pièce offre une multitude de points de vue sur une violence qu’aux USA, on qualifie de « terrorisme intime ».
