La Seine musicale / musique baroque
La Messe de minuit (1694) de Charpentier est l’un des plus parfaits exemples de mélange de tradition populaire et de musique savante. Il se double ici d’une interpénétration du profane et du liturgique, qui n’allait pourtant pas de soi dans la France du Grand Siècle où l’affirmation de la puissance de l’Église passait par une stricte délimitation des territoires du sacré. En portant le texte latin de la messe sur des airs alors connus de tous, Charpentier garde en quelque sorte grandes ouvertes les portes de l’Église, comme l’étaient celles de la grange de Bethléem. Surtout il le fait avec art et simplicité, en un traitement savant de musiques de danse ou de veillées. Avec cette œuvre, on s’approche d’une certaine vérité de la pratique des fêtes religieuses au temps de Louis XIV, ce qui rejoint l’ambition de Sébastien Daucé et de son bel ensemble Correspondances : donner une image pertinente, informée et vivante de la musique du Grand Siècle.
