Sébastien d’Hérin : J’ai créé l’ensemble en 2003 mais je considère que nous n’avons commencé réellement à travailler qu’en 2006. Créer une structure était une évidence… J’aime les chanteurs d’opéra et j’ai naturellement orienté les projets vers le répertoire qui les mettait en valeur. J’aime le théâtre et le drame, ce sont des moments où il est possible de s’exprimer avec peu de retenue, où il faut du caractère et de l’engagement. J’apprécie particulièrement qu’on nous reconnaisse des qualités comme une patte sonore généreuse, une grande palette de couleurs et la souplesse ou la réactivité dans l’accompagnement des solistes.
Orfeo va marquer une étape importante dans le parcours de l’ensemble…
S. d’H. : Ce n’est pas tous les jours qu’on se lance dans une telle aventure ! J’ai beaucoup joué, vu et entendu Orfeo et, presque toujours, j’ai ressenti le besoin d’aborder cette œuvre avec un respect immense, avec la conviction qu’il ne fallait en aucun cas maltraiter la partition : Prima la Musica ! Les Nouveaux Caractères avaient déjà participé à plusieurs productions d’opéra, mais il s’agissait pour cette nouvelle création d’une tout autre aventure : il a fallu prendre en charge toute la réalisation, c’est-à-dire les équipes artistiques, scénographiques et techniques. Nous devions réaliser le projet dans sa globalité, une grande première pour nous !

Aborder cet ouvrage, c’est remonter aux sources mêmes de l’opéra… Quel est votre état d’esprit en abordant ce chef-d’œuvre?
S. d’H. : Orfeo est en même temps une œuvre fondatrice et une œuvre à part. Le génie du compositeur est absolu, on touche en permanence au sublime. Nous sommes en 1607, les instruments de la cour de Mantoue sont réunis pour porter le chant et les paroles de deux hommes, Monteverdi et Striggio. En tant que claveciniste continuiste, j’appréhende naturellement ces longues pages de récitatifs, c’est un travail de réflexion passionnant d’essayer d’imaginer des couleurs d’accompagnement justes et fidèles ainsi que des orchestrations variées. J’ai choisi de redonner l’œuvre avec le même effectif vocal qu’à l’époque : nos solistes seront nos choristes. Ils sont portés par un continuo brillant qui pose le cadre et en même temps autorise les libertés les plus extravagantes. Il s’agit d’une partition savante, avec nombres d’accents méditerranéens et populaires… Les thèmes abordés dans Orfeo sont universels et résonnent avec force aujourd’hui encore.
Comment avez-vous travaillé avec la metteuse en scène Caroline Mutel ?
S. d’H. : La musique devait être magnifiée par la scène, en aucun cas le contraire. La double casquette – artiste lyrique et metteur en scène – de Caroline Mutel était intéressante dans un tel scénario. Je connaissais l’univers de Caroline, sobre et élégant, et je savais qu’elle serait touchée par cette partition, musicalement et dramaturgiquement. J’ai insisté sur l’idée qu’il ne s’agissait pas pour moi d’une œuvre théâtrale au sens dramatique mais plutôt d’une poésie particulière mise en musique. Nous avons parlé de couleurs, de la peinture des siècles passés et des thèmes et postures abordés dans la peinture… J’ai ensuite eu envie de demander à Caroline de chanter le rôle de La Musica, ce personnage tout puissant qui annonce qu’elle vient nous raconter la Fable d’Orphée. Car en dehors de l’évidence musicale, j’aime beaucoup l’idée que la soliste qui interprète ce rôle soit aussi la metteuse en scène du spectacle. Nous travaillons en équipe, nous discutons au quotidien des problèmes et des solutions à inventer. C’est un travail de compagnie.
