Jamais Marie Mengès ne se nomme en confiant au public le dialogue intérieur dont elle est l’héroïne, le sujet désespérément esseulé et incompris. Cette femme du deuxième millénaire déboule sur le plateau comme une extra-terrestre, sorte de robot humain aux mouvements chorégraphiés, un chignon brun de femme de tête chic planté haut, engoncée dans un collant couleur chair qui laisse les bras rayés d’un jeu de lanières noires et des bas noirs pour les jambes. La poupée mécanique libère parfois ses frustrations dans des actes SM sado-maso. À grands coups de fouet, la vengeresse cingle – toute colère démoniaque rentrée – une chaise design tel un double féminin assis et miroir d’elle-même qu’elle se complaît ensuite à caresser méthodiquement. « Peut-être vais-je me faire attacher ? », rêve-t-elle. Un drôle de look pour finalement raconter une histoire éternelle, celle des malentendus sentimentaux quand sont esquissés les prémisses de la vie de couple. La rebelle fait l’expérience du désenchantement face à ce beau mâle égoïste qui l’a racolée, gonflé à bloc en salle de muscu, incapable d’accorder tout plaisir à sa partenaire dans des ébats dérisoires sans idée de partage.

Déçue, elle donne en passant des coups de pied et des coups de poing rageurs à son image reflétée dans la glace. Elle serre les poings, lève haut le genou ou bien lance les bras au ciel pour tancer un dieu sourd ou indifférent. Quand l’amoureuse réfléchit et laisse son esprit vagabonder avant de prendre décision, elle se laisse aller à parcourir les quatre côtés du plateau en galopant, presque un signe d’ivresse et de souffle heureux. Elle peut boxer ou valser ou encore épouser les gestes géométriques d’une figurine de vase égyptien. Une marionnette manipulée et manipulatrice parfois, quand elle met en scène les atouts glamour de son identité. La société véhicule tant de valeurs fausses – ainsi, les images d’« un grand mec, la classe, l’amant idéal et la voix qu’il a, érotique… » et d’une femme fragilisée dans sa quête d’un coeur à prendre. C’est un rêve bâtard de jeune fille vendu cash, clé en mains, billet et séjour compris pour des vacances inespérées à la Jamaïque. Ciel bleu, sable blanc, rien n’y fait : cette soirée de réveillon est définitivement ratée. C’est l’épreuve du chaos pour cette employée de banque célibataire qui saura désormais apprécier sa solitude puisqu’elle signifie liberté : « Je suis un peu chaloupée mais je suis raccrochée à l’humour. » Elle fait rire, cette dame futuriste, rivée à un présent bobo dont elle met à mal les clichés mensongers.
