Anton Tchekhov est, après William Shakespeare, l’auteur dont vous avez mis en scène le plus grand nombre de pièces. Quelle est la raison de cette fidélité ?
Serge Lipszyc : Lorsque l’on s’est approché une première fois de cette matière théâtrale, il est difficile de ne pas avoir envie d’aller plus loin. Le travail que j’ai réalisé sur Ivanov, en 2001, m’a ouvert les yeux sur mon rapport au plateau et à la mise en scène, sur mon propre jeu, mais aussi sur le jeu d’acteur en général… L’œuvre d’Anton Tchekhov, tout en incarnant pleinement une forme de théâtralité, est tellement proche de la réalité qu’elle m’a amené à me poser des questions fondamentales sur le théâtre. Après Ivanov, j’ai donc mis en scène Platonov et Les Trois Sœurs. En abordant à présent Oncle Vania, je me donne une nouvelle fois la chance de voyager avec cet auteur. Il est très intéressant d’observer comment, de pièce en pièce, les thématiques reviennent et se répondent, comment ce théâtre échappe à la mélancolie pour se situer à égale distance du pathétique et de la drôlerie. Cela dans un rapport entièrement direct et sans artifice au jeu d’acteur.

Le théâtre de Tchekhov est donc, pour vous, essentiellement un théâtre d’interprètes…
S. L. : Oui. Anton Tchekhov a écrit des pièces qui ressemblent à la vie, des pièces à la fois très simples et très complexes avec lesquelles il est absolument impossible de tricher. Si on se met à faire du théâtre en jouant Tchekhov, on est mort ! Il faut rester sur le fil, sans cesse se mettre en danger, être le plus à nu possible. C’est l’une des raisons pour lesquelles j’ai souhaité concevoir une représentation épurée, concrète, une représentation qui permette aux spectateurs de plonger très librement dans cette humanité-là, de s’en faire une idée entièrement personnelle.
Qu’est-ce qui vous a amené à choisir Robin Renucci pour interpréter le rôle de Vania ?
S. L. : Robin Renucci est un comédien qui se situe au plus près du texte, au plus près des mots. C’est un véritable artisan du langage : rien ne lui échappe. Pour incarner Vania, j’avais envie d’un acteur de son envergure, un acteur qui parvienne à faire résonner ce rôle et cette pièce dans toutes leurs spécificités. Bien qu’il ne l’ait pas encore beaucoup exploitée, Robin a la capacité d’aller au plus profond de la noirceur. Cela avec une grande légèreté, ce qui contribue à faire resurgir toute la densité et toute l’ambivalence de son personnage, et également à faire naître la drôlerie de Tchekhov. On dit souvent que ce théâtre fait rire et pleurer en même temps. C’est vrai. C’est un théâtre tellement noir qu’il en devient extrêmement drôle.
