« Une galerie de portraits dans laquelle nous pourrions faire déambuler l’auditeur grâce à la musique… » C’est en ces termes que le pianiste Guillaume de Chassy présente « Shakespeare Songs », ambitieuse tentative de transmuer en notes une part de l’œuvre du grand dramaturge anglais. De The Fairy Queen de Henry Purcell à la suite Such Sweet Thunder signée par Duke Ellington, les compositeurs sont nombreux à s’être inspirés des héros, tragiques ou comiques, du théâtre élisabéthain. Au sein d’un trio de jazz qui trouve parfois des élégances dignes de la musique de chambre, Guillaume de Chassy développe avec sensibilité et tension une formule instrumentale originale, qui met en regard son piano et la batterie de Christophe Marguet. Troisième membre de ce groupe, le saxophoniste anglais Andy Sheppard apporte non seulement une touche d’esprit britannique à l’ensemble mais surtout ses talents d’improvisateur, tandis que la comédienne Delphine Lanson, en récitante, prête voix aux personnages convoqués. Une rêverie littéraire et musicale qui prend naturellement toute sa dimension sur les planches d’un théâtre !
