En 2013, Thierry Escaich s’appuyait sur une adaptation de la nouvelle de Hugo Claude Gueux, par Robert Badinter, pour son premier opéra aux allures de plaidoyer social et politique. Huit ans plus tard, La voix humaine de Poulenc – et Cocteau – sert de point de départ au texte Point d’orgue d’Olivier Py et à un deuxième opus lyrique, huis clos d’une grande noirceur. Pour Shirine, le compositeur français puise dans les Mille et une nuits, avec la complicité d’Atiq Rahimi, prix Goncourt 2008. Les amours impossibles de la princesse assyrienne avec le prince perse Khosrow distillent un climat féerique portant une écriture musicale qui ne cesse de se renouveler à chaque opéra. Mise en scène par Richard Brunel, l’actuel directeur de l’Opéra de Lyon, et dirigée par Frank Ollu, cette première mondiale est défendue par un plateau de voix françaises duquel se distinguent, dans le couple de la légende, deux représentants de la nouvelle génération, Jeanne Gérard et Julie Behr.
