Le Théâtre du Châtelet n’est peut-être pas encore tout à fait un Broadway sur Seine, mais la scène dirigée par Jean-Luc Choplin a d’ores et déjà réussi son pari en imposant avec brio un répertoire jusqu’alors négligé, celui de la comédie musicale américaine. La réussite l’an dernier de nouvelles mises en scène de The Sound of Music de Rodgers et Hammerstein et de A Little Night Music de Stephen Sondheim, appelaient de nouvelles découvertes. En attendant une production, plus tard dans la saison, de Sweeney Todd de Sondheim, le Châtelet ouvre sa saison 2010-2011 avec Show Boat de Jerome Kern et Oscar Hammerstein II, un spectacle venu de l’Opéra du Cap.
L’art du divertissement
Considéré comme la première comédie musicale moderne, celle qui a ouvert la voie aux chefs d’oeuvre du genre (ceux précisément que le Châtelet se plaît à faire découvrir au public français), cet ouvrage fut créé en 1927 sous la houlette du fameux Florenz Ziegfeld, producteur tout-puissant du divertissement musical aux États-Unis. Son succès ne s’est jamais démenti à chacune de ses reprises à Broadway, à Londres ou au cinéma. Cela tient bien sûr aux mélodies, simples et élégantes, de Jerome Kern, devenues pour certaines des standards, mais l’importance de l’œuvre tient aussi (et peut-être surtout) à son propos : au-delà de la vie et des intrigues romantiques sur un bateau-théâtre itinérant sur le Mississipi, le livret d’Oscar Hammerstein II, âgé de 31 ans lorsqu’il l’écrivit, visite avec acuité les rapports raciaux dans une Amérique mal apaisée de 1880 à 1927.
