Pénélope, ô Pénélope est une libre inspiration de votre histoire parentale et de l’épisode du retour d’Ulysse à Ithaque jusqu’à la mort des prétendants.
Simon Abkarian : Je suis Arménien, et j’ai deux citoyennetés, libanaise et française. Je raconte l’histoire de ma mère qui a attendu mon père pendant la Guerre du Liban. C’est un prétexte fulgurant à l’écriture théâtrale de Pénélope, ô Pénélope. Le spectateur découvre, un matin, une femme travaillant à sa machine à coudre ; quelqu’un frappe à la porte et lui dit : « Où en es-tu de ma proposition de t’épouser ? » La femme répond négativement en affirmant qu’elle attend son homme. Le prétendant pose un ultimatum pour le lendemain en lui intimant d’accepter sa proposition au risque de voir son fils unique tué. La veille de ce jour, arrive un homme démuni aux allures de mendiant qui affirme qu’il ne tuera plus jamais. Les meurtres qu’il a perpétrés sont si nombreux qu’il en est « gorgé »… C’est Ulysse.
Ce n’est pas l’égrènement des meurtres mais le moment de la reconnaissance familiale qui vous occupe.
S. A. : Ma famille a fait l’expérience de ces retrouvailles entre un père ou une mère et son enfant. C’est le moment de silence qui importe, avant l’acquiescement de la reconnaissance, cet instant précis où les êtres séparés vont se retrouver aussi bien dans les yeux et les corps que dans l’espace. Un père reconnaît son fils, une mère son époux, un fils adulte sa mère morte.
« On a tendance à oublier la puissance de défiguration de la guerre. »
Qu’est-ce qui empêche Pénélope de reconnaître Ulysse ?
S. A. : Pénélope a gardé l’image figée de la jeunesse idéalisée de son mari. De plus, la guerre a complètement transformé l’homme qui revient. On oublie la puissance de défiguration intérieure de la guerre qui rend méconnaissable celui qui s’y essaie. Quand le fantôme de la mère dit à son fils revenu qu’elle n’aimerait pas être son ennemi, celui-ci rétorque : « Moi non plus, Mère, et il m’arrive encore de me redouter moi-même. » À force de ne plus dormir, à force d’avoir des remords et des cauchemars, on change ; cette expérience est un apprentissage. Le travail scénique se fait avec les acteurs John Arnold, Georges Bigot, Jocelyn Laguarrigue, Sarajeanne Drillaud, Catherine Schaub-Abkarian et moi-même.
La fin de l’histoire est-elle heureuse ou malheureuse ?
S. A. : Pour ce qui me concerne, mon père a fait comme Ulysse : il est reparti. Or, l’homme doit se prosterner devant la femme, celle par qui tout a tenu, la clé de voûte du foyer pendant la guerre. Je fais demander pardon – un geste à la mode aujourd’hui – mais ce n’est pas un pardon de pacotille, c’est une prosternation et une génuflexion face à la femme.
