En pleine campagne présidentielle, la programmation de Simon Boccanegra
s’imposait tant l’opéra de Verdi est l’un des ouvrages les plus politiques du
répertoire. La partition s’ouvre d’ailleurs sur une scène d’élection, celle du
Doge de Gênes. Et tout au long des trois actes se nouent les intrigues entre
opposants et révoltes populaires. Avec son atmosphère sombre et ses harmonies
modernistes, Simon Boccanegra tranche avec les opéras populaires de Verdi
où la beauté mélodique prime avec éclat. La majorité des rôles est ici confiée à
des voix graves masculines. On se réjouit ainsi d’entendre dans le rôle-titre
l’époustouflant Dmitri Hvorostovsky, dont chaque apparition est une leçon
d’abattage vocal. Le reste du casting s’annonce également alléchant, avec Franz
Josef Selig (Jacopo Fiesco) ou encore Franck Ferrari (Paolo Albani). Dans la
fosse, ce seront les retrouvailles entre l’Orchestre de l’Opéra et son ancien
patron (de 1995 à 2004) James Conlon, aujourd’hui chef principal de l’Opéra de
Los Angeles. Créée la saison dernière, la production du metteur en scène Johan
Simons prend le parti de la réactualisation et du spectaculaire.
