C’est en janvier 1947 que Simone de Beauvoir publie Pour une morale de l’ambiguïté, une façon de défendre l’existentialisme, une posture morale à laquelle on reproche de réduire l’homme au désespoir dans un monde sans Dieu ni valeur. Simone de Beauvoir engage une tournée de conférences aux Etats-Unis, une aventure anticipée par Jean-Paul Sartre qui l’a précédée. La philosophe rencontre à cette occasion le romancier américain Nelson Algren dont elle tombe amoureuse. Avec cet amant transatlantique, elle engage une correspondance où elle raconte le Paris de l’après-guerre en donnant vie aux cafés, à la politique, à la littérature, aux amis et au travail et en s’épanchant, dans le même temps, sur le bonheur d’aimer. De retour en France, Simone de Beauvoir est métamorphosée par cet amour qui la bouleverse. Ce qui a touché Laure Mandraud, la metteuse en scène et l’interprète de Simone de Beauvoir, accompagnée sur le plateau par Yannick Nédelec, c’est la capacité des mots de la philosophe à ressusciter l’Autre dans l’abolition des distances à travers l’espace et le temps.
