Dans un appartement décati, un vieil acteur atrabilaire ressasse son passé. Du fond de sa solitude, il revient sur sa vie de théâtre, notamment sur le rôle de Richard III qui, il en est persuadé, lui était destiné avant même sa naissance. Son seul lien avec le monde extérieur est une fillette qui lui rend visite pour lui apporter du lait… Créée en 1986 par Bernhard Minetti (c’est pour lui que Thomas Bernhard a écrit cette pièce), Simplement compliqué « hésite entre tragédie et comédie, entre folie et conscience suprême, entre solitude et folie des grandeurs », explique Claus Peymann, actuel directeur du Berliner Ensemble. Ecrite pour « un grand faiseur de théâtre », pour « un acteur génial », cette pièce « offre d’infiniment nombreuses possibilités de jeu », poursuit-il. Des possibilités dans lesquelles se plonge aujourd’hui, sur la scène du Théâtre des Abbesses, le comédien allemand Gert Voss, qui fait de ce texte à l’ironie morose un moment de théâtre « pour rire et pour pleurer ».
