Quelles sont les questions qui vous occupent ?
Maguy Marin : Des questions récurrentes, sur la guerre, le pouvoir, la politique. Sur le passé qui nous construit, le lien avec ceux qui nous ont précédés, qui ont lutté et façonné l’histoire que nous portons en nous aujourd’hui.
Est-ce le besoin de redonner une perspective historique à notre présent ?
M. M. : L’époque nous rend amnésiques, nous entraîne dans un zapping permanent, dans des fictions qu’on nous donne pour vraies, que nous finissons par croire et qui nous polluent terriblement. Nous vivons dans un perpétuel présent. Tout conspire à éviter la confrontation avec notre finitude. Comme si nous n’arrivions pas à nous inscrire dans une histoire plus grande que nous.
Quels sont les matériaux à l’œuvre dans le processus de création ?
M. M. : Ils sont très hétérogènes. Nous travaillons sur des exercices de rythme, sur des textes littéraires, des fragments de récits historiques, sur l’humour. Nous avons également regardé Notre-Dame des Turcs, de Carmelo Bene et des films muets, pour voir comment se dessine la mécanique du corps dans le burlesque. Nous nous exerçons en fait. Le processus procède par élimination, déconstruction, décantation, jusqu’à ce que, peu à peu, une ligne essentielle se dégage.
Comment appréhendez-vous le travail sur le corps ?
M. M. : Le corps est premier. Le travail commence dans un espace vide. Nous expérimentons des propositions, nous nous donnons des contraintes, beaucoup. Le dispositif scénique se construit pour permettre de les réaliser concrètement. Il naît donc du travail du corps, poussé au bout de la présence. Tout doit avoir une nécessité. Parfois, cette exigence me met dans une impuissance redoutable. Mais il faut s’y confronter, pour espérer trouver le geste juste, atteindre une intensité poétique qui hausse le niveau de réflexion.
Vous travaillez depuis quelques années presque avec la même équipe. Qu’est-ce qui vous intéresse chez un danseur ?
M. M. : La capacité technique m’intéresse peu. C’est plutôt une disposition de création, de curiosité, de mise en danger, d’intelligence qui me stimule. La création passe par un dialogue permanent avec les danseurs. Ce qu’ils me renvoient sur mes propositions me permet de percevoir des chemins à explorer ou des impasses.
La question de la représentation semble également au cœur de votre réflexion.
M. M. : Nous sommes farcis de représentations, du monde, de l’autre, de nous-mêmes… J’essaie de défaire toutes les représentations, collées sur les choses, pour arriver à la parole, à la singularité. En les montrant, on les démonte.
