Vous êtes reconnu depuis plus de quarante ans comme un grand spécialiste de Berlioz. À quand remonte votre « rencontre » avec ce compositeur ?
Colin Davis : J’étais encore étudiant, je devais avoir vingt ou vingt et un ans lorsque j’ai entendu pour la première fois Roger Désormière diriger la seconde partie de L’Enfance du Christ. Je n’avais alors jamais rien entendu de tel. J’étais fasciné. Par la suite j’ai entendu Thomas Beecham diriger Berlioz. J’ai assisté à son dernier concert, qui était précisément le Requiem, donné au Royal Albert Hall en 1959.
Appréciez-vous de la même façon le Berlioz des opéras et celui des oeuvres symphoniques et religieuses ?
C.L. : Berlioz n’est jamais le même et j’aime chacune de ses œuvres pour elle-même. Béatrice et Bénédict, par exemple, est une œuvre lumineuse, très apaisée. Le Requiem appelle au contraire à une confrontation avec l’éternité, avec Dieu, il invoque la vie après la mort, le Jugement dernier. Il suit la vision de l’Église catholique et la rend très concrète. C’est un Requiem romantique, comme l’est celui de Mozart. Comme lui, Berlioz fait de son Requiem une œuvre très personnelle, qu’il compose exactement comme il l’entend – il a une vision mentale de sa musique.
Comment allez-vous adapter votre lecture au lieu, dont l’acoustique est assez délicate ?
C.L. : Je n’ai jamais dirigé à Saint-Denis jusqu’à présent et je n’y ai pas non plus entendu de concert. Comme tous les édifices religieux de cette taille, la basilique pose des problèmes d’acoustique, avec un risque de confusion sonore en raison de l’importante réverbération. Il est nécessaire de trouver le bon tempo, dans lequel la musique soit compréhensible. Il faut diriger avec beaucoup de calme, de retenue : harmoniquement, si tout se mélange, il devient impossible de comprendre l’œuvre. Cela dit, malgré ces difficultés, c’est un lieu magnifique pour une telle œuvre.
Vous travaillez régulièrement avec l’Orchestre National de France.
C.L. : J’apprécie beaucoup ces musiciens. C’est un très bon orchestre, avec qui j’ai eu d’excellentes expériences et j’aime travailler. Et je sais qu’ils m’aideront à surmonter les difficultés liées à l’acoustique.

Est-ce particulier pour vous de diriger Berlioz avec un orchestre français ?
C.L. : Je crois que dans tout bon orchestre, les musiciens cherchent à jouer le mieux possible. Ce n’est pas une question de nationalité. J’ai dirigé le Requiem avec la Staatskapelle de Dresde ; c’était en 1994, en commémoration du bombardement de la ville, dans la Kreuzkirche, qui bénéficie d’une acoustique extraordinaire. Pour moi, cela ne fait aucune différence de diriger un orchestre allemand, français ou anglais. En revanche, je suis heureux de diriger cette œuvre à Paris, où Berlioz n’a jamais eu très bonne réputation de son vivant, et même après. D’ailleurs, quand il a été invité à Dresde [en 1854], Berlioz a reçu un accueil triomphal et fut très impressionné par la qualité de l’orchestre.
Vous dirigerez l’an prochain Béatrice et Benedict avec l’Orchestre national en version de concert. Est-ce une formule qui vous plaît particulièrement ?
C.L. : Un opéra comme Béatrice et Bénédict est très difficile à mettre en scène. Je ne l’ai jamais dirigé dans la fosse, contrairement aux Troyens ou à Benvenuto Cellini, et je ne l’ai jamais vu sur scène. En revanche, je l’ai souvent dirigé en concert, comme tous les opéras de Berlioz. L’orchestre peut mieux exprimer sa qualité virtuose lorsqu’il est sur la scène, il peut de lui-même donner vie à l’opéra. Pour les opéras de Berlioz, de même que pour Falstaff ou Fidelio par exemple, une version de concert permet une expression plus directe de l’œuvre. Bien sûr, un metteur en scène peut donner une merveilleuse interprétation d’un opéra, mais, pour l’avoir vécu comme chef d’opéra, je sais que cela n’arrive pas si souvent.
