Avant de revenir dans la même salle, en mars prochain, diriger la Passion selon Saint Matthieu de Bach, Sir John Eliot Gardiner aborde aujourd’hui l’une des partitions mozartiennes où l’influence de Bach se fait la plus évidente : la Messe en ut mineur. Tardive et inachevée, comme le Requiem, empreinte d’un mysticisme bouleversant, l’œuvre sera jouée ici par l’orchestre et le chœur avec lesquels Gardiner l’a enregistrée à Londres en 1986 pour Decca : ses English Baroque Soloists et Monteverdi Choir, deux formations fondées par le maestro anglais il y a un demi-siècle. Cette version de référence, dominant une discographie abondante , livre sur instruments anciens une vision assez grandiose, presque « romantisante », dans une « édition » où les parties inachevées par Mozart ont été complétées par le chef. On ne sait rien encore du casting des quatre chanteurs solistes mais on guettera le nom de la soprano dont les airs sont magnifiques. Et pour cause : ils furent tous écrits pour Constance, la jeune épouse du compositeur qui les chanta lors de la création à Salzbourg en 1783. Au même programme, un autre sommet, la Symphonie n° 40, composée six ans plus tard.
