Ils sont cinq, ont tous suivi le cursus de 4 ans dirigé par Anatoli Vassiliev, de 2004 à 2008, à l’E.N.S.A.T.T. A l’issue de cette formation collective à la mise en scène, Agnès Adam, Stéphanie Lupo, Yves Beauget, Cédric Jonchière et Stéphane Poliakov ont fondé la compagnie Spectacle Laboratoire, groupement artistique visant à « maintenir vivante l’exigence d’un travail de laboratoire », notamment par le biais d’un « processus de mise en action des textes ». Aujourd’hui, ces cinq jeunes metteurs en scène créent à L’Atalante un spectacle réunissant six nouvelles d’Anton Tchekhov (Volodia le grand et Volodia le petit, Récit d’un inconnu, Le Pari, Le Moine noir, Ma Vie, La Maison à mezzanine) — spectacle polyphonique centré sur l’une des questions centrales de l’œuvre de l’auteur russe : « la vie humaine qui s’affirme plus forte entre deux mondes, intermédiaire entre l’absolu et la respiration du quotidien ». Le travail, l’instruction, l’union libre, l’utilité sociale, la vérité, l’espoir d’un monde meilleur, l’amour… Souhaitant faire se rencontrer leurs différents univers personnels et la richesse du matériau tchekhovien, les membres de Spectacle Laboratoire (ici, tour à tour comédiens et metteurs en scène) ont travaillé à se rapprocher de la langue de l’écrivain comme de la vie de ses nouvelles, afin d’en trouver « le juste équivalent scénique ».
